When pine makes sense

Not every piece needs to last fifty years. For a child's room that will change in a few years, a guest room, or shelving that will be painted, pine gives you real wood at a modest price. Its pale colour suits light, airy rooms and Scandinavian-inspired designs.

Pine is also a good base for painted finishes – white, pastel or bold colours – which hide the knots if you prefer a cleaner look.

Pine vs engineered wood

Pine and engineered wood sit at similar price points. Pine is real solid wood that can be sanded and repaired; engineered board is flatter and more uniform but harder to repair once chipped or swollen by water. For frames and shelves, pine is often the better choice; for wide flat wardrobe panels, engineered board stays flatter.

Upgrading from pine

If you want the same light look with more durability, consider oak or beech. For a value hardwood with more character, see mango wood. Our wood types index compares them all.

Getting the best from pine furniture

Good pine furniture starts with good boards. Look for pieces made from properly dried timber with tight, sound knots rather than loose or cracked ones, and check that load-bearing parts such as bed rails and shelf supports are thick enough – pine is softer than hardwood, so it needs more material to carry the same weight.

Finish choice changes pine's character completely. Clear lacquer keeps the natural pale colour, which will slowly deepen to a honey tone; white or coloured paint gives a clean, modern or playful look for kids' rooms; a dark stain can make pine resemble pricier hardwoods, though the softer surface remains. Pine furniture is also easy to refresh later: light marks can be sanded out and repainted at home.

Pine in children's rooms

Children's rooms change quickly – a cot becomes a single bed, toy shelves become bookshelves. Pine's low cost and easy refinishing make it a sensible choice here, and rounded edges and non-toxic paints make pieces safer for young children.

Pine: FAQs

Is pine furniture durable?

Pine is durable enough for light and moderate use, especially in bedrooms and storage, but it dents more easily than hardwoods.

Is pine good for kids' furniture?

Yes. It is light, affordable and easy to paint, which makes it popular for children's beds, wardrobes and shelves.

Does pine furniture get termites?

Pine has little natural resistance, so it should be treated and sealed and kept in dry rooms. Treated pine furniture used indoors performs well.

Pine is a softwood from coniferous trees. It is lighter and softer than hardwoods such as sheesham or oak.
